Are you a holistic practitioner who started your professional training with a dream of all the people you were going to help and a passion to do so?

Let me ask you a couple of questions…and be honest when you answer them:

  • Do you feel frustrated when you think of all the people you could be helping if you could just get them in front of you?
  • Did you start out with absolute conviction that you were doing what you always felt you were meant to do?
  • Was the day you received your professional qualification a day in which you celebrated your journey so far with a great sense of hope and optimism?
  • Did you feel a burning desire to put what you’d learned in the service of others?
  • Did you start your practice with the encouragement and support of friends who really wanted to see you succeed in your mission?
  • Did you create, or have created for you stunning business cards and brochures, perhaps even some flyers or posters? Did you hand these out to everyone you thought you could at every opportunity?
  • Did you visit all the health food shops, holistic centres and any other seemingly suitable premises in your locality, and display the beautiful posters you’d worked so hard to create on their noticeboards? Did you then wait for the phone to ring?
  • Did you create, or have created for you a beautiful website which you felt was just you; or perhaps you ended up with one that just didn’t feel quite right? Either way, you didn’t really get any clients coming through from it?
  • Did you question if perhaps advertising would help? Then advertised your practice in local newspapers, journals and magazines? Possibly advertising in specific ‘holistic’ or ‘health’ publications?
  • Did you at any stage think, “If I was to train in an additional therapy I’d have more to offer clients and I’m sure that would make a difference”? Did you take more expensive courses, gain additional qualifications, yet sadly discovered it didn’t really improve your situation at all? Is it possible that you may now have a wall full of certificates but few clients?
  • Have you ever taken a stand at a holistic show or fair and wonder if it was really worth your while when you consider the expense and all that was involved in the process?
  • Did you set up a Facebook page and get everyone you could think of to ‘Like’ it, sign up for a LinkedIn profile or a Twitter account; after all isn’t this what you’re supposed to do these days? Yet your inbox isn’t flooded with enquiries from interested parties keen to know more about what you have to offer?
  • Did you do everything right, everything you thought you were supposed to do yet you’re still not seeing all the clients you could be and that you want to? Do you feel disappointed and frustrated when you think of all the people you could be helping if you could just get them in front of you?
  • Do you feel discouraged when you think of all the time and money you’ve spent so far in trying to promote yourself? Have you begun to doubt yourself or start questioning whether becoming a holistic practitioner was the right choice for you after all?

If you can answer YES to at least 3 of these questions then you should know that I help people exactly like YOU. Are you fed up that your dream is not a reality yet? Einstein once said that you can’t solve a problem with the same mind that created the problem. In the same way that your clients need you at points in their lives where they’re a bit stuck, to help them get back on track and reclaim their power, sometimes you need help like that in your own practice. You’d be unusual if you didn’t!

    Hello Abigail. I met you at our last Monday Morning meet ups in Shankill. I really connected to so much of what you said. I really liked your comment that its the therapist themselves the prospective client will connect to and not so much the therapy. So we should talk more about what we uniquely bring to our practise rather than the practise. I probably could say “yes” to almost all your above questions.
    At the moment I’m getting referrals from existing clients. I’ve NEVER attracted a client by either advertising or having an article published. Ditto applies for putting in appearance at a Health Fair (Ardgillan Castle essential gathering festival may be exception?).
    Would be most interested to hear more of what you have to say about promoting ourselves.

      Hi Eugenie, many thanks for your comment. It was a real pleasure to meet you and to hear your talk last Monday. I can imagine many people on meeting you and hearing you speak may think “Whatever she’s doing I want some!”. You have a very attractive and warm presence and energy, which I found delightful to experience. I can totally understand how you would get many referrals. My guess is that if you decided to practice a different form of therapy you’d still have a thriving practice because YOU are definitely the attractor factor in it!

      Having articles published may not immediately lead to a rush of clients but it can help with building authority, credibility and visibility. While I always encourage practitioners to keep doing whatever is obviously working, I read the most recent article you wrote and my first thought was “Excellent, that would speak to many people today”. As you’re sharing the article and speaking on the topic it addresses, you’re providing value. Those who write informative articles of interest to a particular audience tend to be viewed as experts with something worthwhile to contribute. There is something very attractive about those who provide value rather than just relentlessly promote themselves.

      Because of who you are as a person and the life experiences you’ve had, no-one could write the very same articles you do. They are your unique contribution and over time each one will add to your perceived authority and credibility. These are always assets in building any long term sustainable business. I would suggest that you include a clear Call To Action at the end of your articles. I always think an article isn’t quite complete without that. If readers want to know how they can read more from you or how they may contact you, make it easy for them by showing them the next step in that process.

    Hi Abigail,
    I’m sorry to say that just about all of your statements above resonated for me. I feel as if I have tried every possible thing to market my buisness, but it is still going slow as h-l. 2,5 years ago I moved to a different town, which naturally made me have to start all over again. I would be very thankful for some pointers as to how my thinking in some areas might be stuck. Even if I do feel I’ve become a completely new person over these 14 years I’ve run my company.
